Traveling waves describe a propagating phenomenon that carries energy along its path. The traveling nature of vibrations, their identification, control and modeling lie at the very center of engineering, mechanics and play an important role in numerous engineering fields. The special issue's aim is to encourage researchers to highlight the importance and use of traveling waves in their individual discipline. Indeed, the special issue contains diverse areas discussing waves in continuous structures [1-5] granular materials and discrete models [6-9], they also appear in rotating machines [10], infinite and finite elastic structures, linear and nonlinear phenomena, free, forced and closed-loop controlled waves [1,5,6,9]. Sensing and sensors pay an important role [1,2,5] in the identification and control of waves and correctly placed actuators must take into account the traveling nature of the vibrations [1,2,4-6,8,9]. Wavelength and frequency relationship are crucial for the amplification, reflection and decay of waves as discussed in [1-10]. Traveling wave models can simplify and reduce the required computational effort while shading more light on the underlying phenomenon when inhomogeneous [7] and spatial periodicity [3,7] are taken into account.
