The effect of citric acid (CA) addition on the disaggregation of crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles under calcium-rich conditions was investigated in this study. HAp nanoparticles were prepared by a wet chemical precipitation process under calcium-rich conditions, which included an excess amount of calcium ions compared with the stoichiometric Ca/P molar ratio of HAp, with added CA. The formation of calcium citrate under calcium-rich conditions was highly effective for inhibiting the aggregation of nanosize HAp primary particles, and thus highly crystalline and disaggregated HAp nanoparticles were obtained.
