Aship at sea has six degrees of freedom superimposed on its intended direction of travel: roll, pitch, yaw, sway, heave and surge. But it is roll which causes the most problems, from comfort on cruise ships, to gun aiming issues on warships, and the accuracy of marine measurement on survey vessels; and it is the movement which causes most capsizes. However, roll is also the only one of these movements which can be effectively and efficiently controlled and minimised.
