A ship-shaped hull's waterplane area and its effective beam can change considerably with changes in the ship's waterline profile, particularly in very fine lined hulls with a low block coefficient and pronounced flare at the bow and/or the stern. The transverse metacentric height 'KMT', and consequently, the ship's stability, varies as a wave passes along the hull's length so any slight heel angle that the ship may have will increase and decrease rhythmically with the pitch and heave cycle.
