I used to have a colleague who described books as "a right doorstop" of a book. When I challenged him that this wasn't very complimentary to authors who had put a lot of work and effort into researching the subject to produce a comprehensive (and weighty) volume, his response was that it was the highest praise he could give as the only books he ever used for doorstops were ones that he wanted to read, and by keeping them next to the door he would always know where they were when he felt like a browse!
