A technology company was building a new corporate headquarters to signal a new direction and restore their somewhat tarnished image. The task of building the campus fell on the incumbent director of facilities, Jack. An experienced leader, Jack was accomplished and sure of himself. Jack let senior management know that he'd get back to them with a scoping for the project. He made it clear that he knew where he was going and how to get there. Roughly 12 months later, Jack presented his watertight plan to the board. But soon their questions turned in an unanticipated direction: How would this property enhance the company's image? Jack hadn't taken this into account when he and his team had gone through the usual motions. Senior management saw this as a strategic marketing effort, not just another building, a message he had completely missed. Jack was asked to leave the company.
