If that free period on your child's timetable in between Break and Physics gets filled with a lesson on the importance of safety standards in design, don't be surprised. Standards education is climbing up the agenda as BSI and the government stress the importance and benefits of standardization from an early age. BSI has been conducting a major review of its whole educational offering recently, with input from government departments, industry, professional organizations and consumers. Its findings will result in an expanded, more prominent programme of publications and services for students of all ages. The reasons for communicating with schools, colleges and further education are many and varied. BSI says it wants to convey various messages about the concept and benefits of standardization to more people, in line with the concept of "lifelong learning". It is important that different styles of messages are communicated to different people at the right stages in their education. It also wants to ensure that technical committee members continue to be of sufficiently high calibre so that standards developed are relevant to those that will use them.The scope will not stop with education establishments, either, but extend to continuing professional development (CPD) in the workplace (see box).
