It was in 1952, when working for Alastair Morton in the Lake District, that I first saw copies of the Ciba Review. No one had told me that this wonderful publication of the Swiss dye firm of Ciba, though free, was only sent to textile firms and important libraries. So, in my ignorance, I wrote to Basel asking to be put on their mailing list, mentioning my interest in textile research. I will never know by what good luck, or maybe error, it came to pass but a few weeks later, I received a badly-packed box containing every single copy of the Ciba Review from the first one in September, 1937, to the current one. A short note said that I would be sent each future issue as it appeared.
