A new book by Jenny Dean is always welcome and this latest offering is no exception. It begins with an introduction outlining Jenny's starting point, researching the techniques of Iron Age and Roman-era dyers, moving back from her previous studies of Anglo-Saxon and Celtic dyeing and forwards to the colours that can be obtained by craftspeople today. Whilst there are no recipes as such, there is sufficient discussion about the methods of dyeing and the ingredients to make it possible for a novice to set about experimenting with every expectation of success. For those of us with a little more experience, the book is a treasure trove of possibilities and the luscious colour plates an inspiration!
