The Theo Moorman Trust for Weavers Awards

Theo Moorman MBE (1907-1990) was a well known artist weaver. She produced many large commissioned pieces for cathedrals and churches, whilst her wall-hangings, of great subtlety and delicacy, often went into private homes. To achieve her woven artistic vision Theo was often innovative, both with her tools, such as developing an adjustable height fan reed, and with her weave structures. She invented a technique which became known by her name and she was in demand to teach it to others. She documented the 'Theo Moorman Technique' in her 1975 book, Weaving as an Art Form. She established the Theo Moorman Trust, a charitable Trust for weavers, in 1985; it came into operation on her death in 1990. Biennially, the Trust, under the supervision of its trustees, grants awards to younger weavers in the early stages of their careers who show potential and commitment, as well as to more experienced weavers for a particular project or for time out to develop their work. As Theo Moorman herself would have wanted, the Trustees ensure that the grants awarded enable individual weavers to maintain a high standard of work, and through this, promote weaving as an art form.
