The book covers entire process involved in second-generation bioalcohol production from lignocellulosic biomass. It is divided in five parts. First part that contains four chapters describes pretreatment and fractionation processes of lignocellulosic biomass for alcohol production. Chapter 1 deals with hydrothermal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Hydrothermal treatment on biomass and treatment severity are explained very briefly with kinetic equations. Chapter 2 describes various thermochemical pretreatment processes (acid, alkali, oxidative, organosolv, ionic liquid and biological). A comparative study is given on effectiveness of leading pretreatments based on corn stover and poplar. Chapter 3 discusses key features of pretreated lignocellulosic biomass solids and their impact on hydrolysis. Key substrate features controlling cellulose hydrolysis include crystallinity, degree of polymerization and degree of hemicelluloses acetylation. Inhibitory effect of lignin on enzymatic hydrolysis has been critically evaluated. Chapter 4 particularly concentrated on solvent fractionation. This is comparatively a short chapter focused on cellulose solvent and organic solvent based lignocellulosic fractionation (COSLIF) process.
