Asymmetric synthesis of 2-substituted piperidines. Synthesis of the alkaloids (-)-coniine and (+)-pseudoconhydrine

The development of methods for the asymmetric syn- thesis of piperidines remains an area of considerable interest due to the presence of this heterocyclic ring in a large number of biologically important compounds. We now report a new approach to chiral, nonracemeic piper- idines, illustrated by the synthesis of the hemlock alkaloids (-)-coniine (1) and (+)-pseudoconhydrine (2).
