摘要

This book weaves together three strands. First, it adds to the case for a more explicit treatment of inter-group or 'horizontal' inequalities in contemporary political economy analysis and development studies. Second, four chapters of historical narrative brilliantly explore how group inequalities in Peru have evolved and proven to be so resilient to change. Third, it draws on primary research in three locations across the country to examine contemporary social identity, local collective action and political mobilisation, or lack of it. These strands are brought together into a strong overarching argument: that the relative weakness of Peru's explicitly indigenous politics is a tragedy.
