Gerry Smyth and Jo Croft start their introduction to this edited volume with the observation that the house, as an inevitable and substantial part of almost everyone's life, does not lend itself to a distanced and completely objectified study. Authors writing about the house cannot help but be engaged in a more thorough manner than they might be in writing about other cultural phenomena. It is not surprising therefore that more than one contribution to this volume builds upon autobiographical elements, linking literature and theory with personal experience.
