摘要

In his 2005 text, Teaching and Evaluating Writing in the Age of Computers and High-Stakes Testing, Carl Whithaus gives teachers of college composition, teacher educators, and even high school English teachers something to talk about. The something is writing and assessment, a subject already on the tips of our tongues thanks to No Child Left Behind, the new writing section on the SAT, and K-12 state-mandated testing systems such as Texas's TAAS and Michigan's new Merit Exam which offers students a "reportable ACT score" (ACT). Said tongues will not be wagging as a result of reading Whithaus's book; however, heads will be nodding as readers move through the well-researched and organized arguments that Whithaus offers in Teaching and Evaluating Writing.
