If national pride on the sport's field were a competition, then both Australia and New Zealand would win platinum gongs. It is almost a national characteristic, a time honoured tradition for the young warriors to display their machismo in the sporting arena. Sports personalities are gods and sports medicine definitely a highly specialised area of care. No self respecting sports club would be without its podiatrist and the national press debate the merits of hard and soft orthoses when considering the performance of the premier teams. Such is the level of awareness of sports podiatry in Australasia. In the absence of a professional written culture however, the paradox is that the accumulated experience of sports podiatry is seldom made public. The Australian Podiatrist and Journal of New Zealand Podiatry are excellent publications, but are available quarterly and bi-annually respectively. There is an Academy of Sports Podiatry but its publications are not accessible to a wide readership and only very few podiatric studies appear in other refereed sports journals.
