Lost In Translation? Addressing Barriers in the Application of Industrial Process Improvement Methodologies to Health Care

The barriers to making process improvements in health care are coming into clearer focus as the number of organizations conducting improvement projects increases. Although only four types of barriers are mentioned here, more can be identified. After barriers are identified, they can be analyzed, and effective solutions can be developed, implemented, and shared. Following Batalden's belief that "Quality is not a proprietary item in health care,"an open dialog should be conducted to discuss barriers to implementation, as well as attempted strategies, both successful and unsuccessful, to best promote process improvements in health care.
