Solutions for the smaller ship: Bahrain's Al Riffa upgrade

At the lower end of the scale, the principles of replacing legacy technology with modern COTS/OA systems and new sensors have similarly taken hold. An example of a legacy warship upgrade in an entirely different weight class can be seen in the Royal Bahrain Naval Forces (RBNF).rnBuilt in the first half of the 1980s by Lurssen in Germany, the RBNF's pair of 38 m Al Riffa-class fast attack craft are intended primarily for patrol tasks and possess a limited ASuW capability. When it came to modernising the craft, each of which has accumulated more than 25 years of service, the RBNF looked to Swedish company Saab for a solution.
