No gain without pain: the hard road to AFV active protection

The path to developing an effective active protection system (APS) to shield armoured vehicles from incoming rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) is painful, technically complex and takes several years of effort. That was the message conveyed to Jane's in late March by a spokesman from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems: the Israeli company whose Trophy APS is installed across the Israel Defense Force's (IDF's) heavy armour fleets, with a Trophy LV version also having been developed to protect lighter vehicles.
