On 25 percent of the global crop areas, GM (genetically modified) varieties of soybeans, cotton, corn, and rapeseed (canola) are grown today. The genes that have been introduced into these crops confer resistance to certain herbicides or produce toxins against specific insect pests. The United States accounts for almost two-thirds of bio-engineered crops produced globally. Other major countries where GM crops are grown include Argentina, Canada, Brazil, China, and South Africa". The future ISO standards being developed are of global relevance since they can contribute to facilitate international trade and services by providing an internationally consistent approach to the detection and analysis of GMO derived foods. This will enable affected stakeholders such as seed industries, crop growers, food producers and analytical laboratories to respond to labelling provisions that numerous countries around the world have developed, or are now developing and will provide food control authorities with a tool to control compliance with legal requirements.
