Simulation is a powerful tool for solving complex engineering, management and finance issues when analytical solutions are difficult or impossible to obtain. This tool is even sharper than ever with the dramatic advances in computer science in recent years. Monte Carlo and discrete event simulation have been successfully used in many areas and reliability engineering is among the most popular ones. For example, successful applications of simulation approaches can be found in Ingolfsson et al. (2003), Pidd et al. (1996), Bulteau and Khadiri (2002), Ding et al. (2007), Marquez et al. (2005) and Juan et al. (2008). Given the popularity of simulation methods, it is not surprising that ReliaSoft's BlockSim, a simulation software package, is one of the best sellers among our company's 12 reliability engineering software products.
