A sound argument

If there's one phrase that can be guaranteed to be heard during a discussion about audio for pictures it is 'sound is the poor relation'. In recent years it appeared that the situation was improving and audio was being welcomed with open arms, with many apologies, into the video family. But at the Production Show during June the old adage was trotted out again, often on the lips of people relatively new to the business who, if we were to believe the change in attitude, should have been benefiting from vision people being well disposed to sound. Kevin Hilton reports. Despite the reappearance of the whingeing old phrase, over the past few years dubbing mixers, sound editors and bosses of audio facilities have been saying that more directors and producers understand sound and what it can do for a production. The profile of sound to picture has been pushed beyond what the cinema was already doing by the continuing success and popularity of DVD, which features Dolby and DTS 5.1 on many TV originated releases as well as feature films.
