How to Get the Most Out of Your GP Tutorials

GP tutorials, together with General Practice Vocational Training Scheme teaching and on-the-job experience, form the bedrock of general practice training. All GPs in training working in GP practices experience regular one-to-one tutorials with a named GP trainer. These provide both educational and clinical supervision. However, one-to-one tutorials are a relatively new experience for many trainees used to larger group teaching based in hospitals. Moreover the proximity and longevity of the GP trainer-trainee relationship is unique within medicine. The one-to-one setting has its benefits and also disadvantages. This article aims to look closely at the pros and cons of the one-to-one tutorials, with a view to helping both trainees and trainers get the most out of them.
