According to the Merriam-Webster website, the word "mentor" came from ancient Greek literature. In Homer's The Odyssey, while Odysseus was away from home fighting and journeying for 20 years, his son Telemachus was raised by Mentor, a trusted friend. When the goddess Athena decided to complete Telemachus' education, she disguised herself as Mentor and they set out to learn about his father. Today, mentor is used to describe one who is a positive, guiding influence in another person's life.
