John James is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. His interest in astronomy comes through clearly in the text, though, with that noted, developments that have taken place in spectroscopy now play an important role in many other fields of applied science, which also includes that of remote sensing. Two examples of remote sensing are a future satellite in the ESA Global Monitoring for Environment and Security system (GMES), and in the German satellite hyperspectral sensor (EnMap). A further possible development in astronomy is where a Mosir 950 spectroscopy camera may be used for the NASA/US Department of Energy Joint Dark Energy Mission. The author's approach to the subject is evidently a practical one as it includes many insights in addition to covering the theoretical aspects necessary for an understanding of the subject. Chapters 3 and 4 provide a concise and useful description of relevant optical principles, with Chapter 5 providing a brief revision of Fourier transforms. As such the book is well suited to both the engineer and the scientist as a convenient source of information.
