In 2010, Ed Vaizey was appointed government minister responsible for TV and radio, and was thus the man who would oversee the FM switch-off already planned by Whitehall. Soon after, he came to a press event on London's South Bank. I managed to speak to him directly and suggested that he leave his official car in the garage for a day and try fitting a DAB receiver to one of the millions of older cars that had been sold - and which were still being sold -with factory-fitted analogue radios and analogue frequency aerials.
