TIGF, a wholly owned subsidiary of Total, is the legacy operator of the Lussagnet gas storage facility in south-west France, set up in 1957 to modulate natural gas production. As demand for gas has grown additional storage capacity has been added, meaning that the site now has four times the capacity that it had 50 years ago. Bearing in mind the forecast pace of gas demand growth and the liberalisation of the European natural gas market, TIGF felt it was time to upgrade the systems in place at the site, which had developed in a piecemeal way over many years. TIGF needs to be able to respond quickly to changing demand patterns and is seeking to participate in a major transmission hub for southern Europe.
