The first three Soviet-designed MiG-21bis aircraft were acquired in 1992, during the early years of Croatia's independence. At the time, Croatian forces were battling the former Yugoslav state. By 1995, Croatia had acquired up to 40 more MiG-21s via Ukraine; many of these were stripped for spare parts, with only 20 fighters, plus four MiG-21UM Mongol two-seat trainers, used in service.
