In "Spitting into the Wind" (Oct. 27, p. 70) Lee Gomes levels several criticisms against the Personal Genome Service offered by 23andMe, many of which we believe show a misunderstanding of the current state of genetic research. Mr. Gomes asserts that a consumer cannot derive useful information from learning his or her genetic information, but multiple scientificrnstudies have shown that several conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, prostate cancer and the type of Parkinson's disease associated with a mutation in the LRRK2 gene (which, as the article notes, Sergey Brin recently discovered he inherited), are strongly associated with certain genes.
