Academic success

The news that the government has come as close as possible to making sprinkler protection all but mandatory in newly built or refurbished schools has been welcomed by many sectors of the fire safety community (see our news story on page 7). It marks the culmination of a long and growing campaign - led by the National Fire Sprinkler Network - to persuade ministers to come down more firmly in favour of sprinklers. Many local authorities had already made it obligatory in their areas, and the growing clamour from fire chiefs, MPs, teachers and trade unions in the end became irresistable.
