Designed by internationally recognized architect Cesar Pelli teamed with Architectural Alliance, a local firm, the new Minneapolis Central Library's soaring roofline is an instant icon anchoring the north end of the Nicollet Mall downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. But library patrons entering under its wing-like overhang may not be aware of the innovative technology overhead. With its gala grand opening on May 20, 2006, the Library becomes the first building downtown to sport an extensive green roof. Landscape architect Peter MacDonagh of Kestrel Design Group Inc., Minneapolis has combined 40 years of state-of-the-art European green roof technology with the 5,000-year evolution of the native Bedrock Bluff Prairie Plant Community to create a living, breathing building for Minnesota.
