At the announcement of its annual results last week, New Zealand company Kordia confirmed that its plan to build a submarine cable between Australia and New Zealand Is on hold. The New Zealand Herald quoted Kordia CEO, Geoff Hunt, saying: "Our assessment is that the market isn't quite ready [for the cable]. We've done the work, we're taking a pause at present, there are other cable projects around. When the market conditions change we'll reignite." The NZ Herald said that OptiKor "Was originally intended to rival the Southern Cross cable, which has a monopoly on the sale of international Internet capacity [out of New Zealand]." However, OptiKor was only ever planned to link New Zealand and Australia."
