It is arguable whether evidence of human influence in the landscape detracts from or adds to its interest and significance. We can claim that landscapes are valued because they are, or appear to be, wild, pristine and untouched—or equally they can be valued because of the discernible palimpsest of human activity. Humans in the Land clearly dwells in the latter view and can be seen as related to the earlier work of Porteous (1996) who discussed the humanist approach to environmental aesthetics. It, to me, also echoes the writings of Proctor and Pincetl (1996) who felt that it is 'the recognition of nature-culture inter-twining... that will prove central to the sustaining of habitats' (p. 683).
