In Raumtheorie [space theory] Jorg DuEnne and S GUEnzel offer the reader a selection of thirty key texts on space, in German. The book is divided into six sections, each of which is introduced by an overview, which sets the subsequent five contributions into their academic context.rnIn the preface we learn that in the Romanic as well as the German context the meanings of space may be traced back to the late Middle Ages, but that they are not directly linked to the antique notions of topos or chora. The Latin roots of the French espace and the English space refer to an empty field or a period of time, which may be filled with activities, whereas the German Raum (which also means room) is closely linked to territorial demarcations, particularly in the context of clearing woodlands, cultivating land, and setting up settlements. Space and Raum therefore refer implicitly to relational and to territorial conceptions of space, respectively, and these two basic positions in space theory are still echoed by a certain antagonism between German and French contributions.
