There is a growing trend for companies to use some form of executive coaching to support their senior staff and develop new talent. In the United Kingdom, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development runs an annual Learning and Development Survey and in 2008 71% of the 730 companies surveyed were using either internal or external coaching. Of this group, 44% offered coaching to all employees. What is it about coaching that is drawing more individuals to invest in themselves and for companies to invest in this intense development for their people? People seek coaching for different reasons. It can be brought in as a development tool for those who want to fast-track their careers, for newly promoted managers whose leadership skills haven't caught up with their position or, more rarely, for staff whose performance is under par.
