I recently purchased Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier by Edward Glaeser. In this book, Mr. Glaeser argues that our largest urban areas have become the lifeblood of society because they are energy efficient, innovative, synergistic, productive and the wellspring for every form of opportunity. Where do you go for the best schools, the greatest hospitals, the best sources of entertainment, money to start your businesses, the best-paying jobs, the most energy-efficient forms of housing, etc.? There is nothing wrong with rural areas, but rural existence, unfortunately, does not represent the future, no matter what the Sierra Club would have you believe.
