Although the push may have slowed down, economics and price are continuing to drive a revival for nuclear power generation, says the head of Atomic Energy Of Canada Limited (AECL).rn"Nuclear energy is the most cost-effective of the available base-load, electricity-producing technologies," Hugh MacDiarmid, president and chief executive officer at AECL, told a recent Calgary Chamber of Commerce gathering.rn"And even with oil at $40 (U.S.) or less per bbl, nuclear is a smart long-term hedge against fossil fuel costs," he pointed out.rnMacDiarmid noted that, for many countries, security of supply has become a vital national concern as they realize how vulnerable their economies are to interrupted deliveries of oil and gas.
