Setting new assembly standards in stone requires addressing the concerns and uncertainties in the electronics indus- try. More specifically, the technology commonly referred to as "soldering" continues to evoke much discussion and emotion as to what are the best—or correct — criteria for acceptability of products. In the 1970s, when compliance to some military soldering specifications increased end-product costs by as much as 25 percent, there was understandable cause for concern. Today, specifications and standards do not have such a significant cost impact. In fact, current specifications focus more on system control and less on detailed process requirements. This translates to doing what is smart, vs. what is prescribed by onerous specifications. But what are some of the important issues when it comes to implementing and using today's assembly specifications? And are standards still relevant in manufacturing today?
