All electronics components generate heat in use, which can negatively affect the reliability and failure rate of semiconductors in the form of increased leakage currents, oxide breakdown, and electromigration. Smaller package size and larger numbers of transistors on an IC lead to greater heat generation with less package space to accomplish the dissipation.
