The special issue of Educational Research in 2009 will focus on National CurriculumnAssessment (NCA) in England. NCA has been in place in England for over 15 yearsnand now seems to be at a point of change. This special issue gives an opportunity tonreflect, review and consider the success and failure of the system within an integratednsetting. It is hoped to do this using a general validity framework, so that papers maynconsider the purposes, methods, reliability, curriculum relevance, informationnprovided and consequences of the assessment system or its components. Both thentests and teachers’ assessments may be the subject of articles.
