In 1995, test data were obtained from three sample populations of students. Population 1 consisted of students enrolled in the two adjacent school grades that contained the largest proportion of nine-year olds (equivalent to Years 4 and 5 in England); population 2 consisted mainly of 13-year olds (international seventh and eighth grades, Years 8 and 9 in England); and population 3 were students in their final year of secondary education, though not all countries participated in the tests for the two older populations. A further round of international testing (on a smaller scale) was completed early in 1999, which will enable a comparison to be made of the performance of a sample of 13-year olds with that of a cohort which, in 1995, consisted mainly of nine-year olds, thus providing an opportunity to look at their progression.
