Nothing has struck me as so odd since I entered the world of universities as the restrictions put on freedom of speech in higher education - the very place where it should be sacrosanct. Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity, by Joanna Williams - education editor for spiked, the online magazine - is thus to be warmly welcomed. It is a measure of how rapidly this issue is developing that her book does not include Sir Tim Hunt, the Nobel prize-winning scientist, being forced to resign from University College London in June 2016 for an ill-advised joke about women in science.
