Therateofcerebellargranulecellmigrationisalteredbyneonatalhypo-andhyperthyroidisminamannersimilartopreviouslyreportedeffectsonthegrowthofgranulecellaxons,theparallelfibers,suggestingthatthetwoprocessesmaybeintimatelylinked.Alteredratesofgranulecellacquisitionintheseexperimentalanimalsreflectchangesingerminalcellproliferationintheexternalgranularlayer(EGL),movementofpostmitoticcellswithintheEGL,aswellastherateandtimecourseofgranulecellmigration.Resultsofthisstudysupportthehypothesisthatgranulecellsmigratetotheinternalgranularlayerbytranslocationofthecellbodythroughthedescendingportionofthegrowingparallelfiber,ratherthanbyamoeboid-likemigrationoftheperikaryontrailingtheelongatingparallelfiberbehind.
