I am very delighted to be able to attend the opening ceremony of the First Beijing Forum today. Six months agowhen I visited Peking University, I had already learned that this forum was to be held here. I was eager to attend thisforum which was to assemble more than 400 distinguished scholars. Therefore I tried to get more information aboutthis Beijing Forum by visiting the website of Peking University, from which I learned that there would be more than14 panels on various subjects of humanities and social sciences. I felt it must be a very exciting and interestingforum. Though I have not prepared any academic paper to be presented here, I do have some thoughts which Iwould like to share with you.
