Herewereportathoroughanalysisofcross‐predictionsbetweencoiled‐coilanddisorderedproteinsegmentsusingvariouspredictionalgorithmsforbothsequenceclasses.Coiled‐coilsareoftenpredictedtobeunstructured,consistentwiththeirobligatemultimericnature,whereasreversecross‐predictionsarerareduetotheregularityofcoiled‐coilsequences.WeproposethesimultaneoususeoftheprogramsCoilsandIUPredtoachieveacceptablepredictionaccuracyandminimizetheextentofcross‐predictions.Therelevanceofobservedcross‐predictionsmightbethatdisorderedsequencescanadoptcoiled‐coilconformationrelativelyeasilyduringproteinevolution...
