According to World Tourism Barometer, the thrice-yearly publication of the World Tourism Organisation, international tourist arrivals reached an all-time record of 760 million in 2004. Add to this the corporate travellers and the fact that 30–50% of travellers become ill or are injured while travelling, and it becomes easy to see why travel medicine (‘the maintenance of the health of international travellers through health promotion and disease prevention’) is such a rapidly growing specialty.
