Role of Antioxidants in Hypertension

Hypertension (HT ) is a major health problem worldwide.Individuals with hypertension are at an increased risk forstroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. Although theaetiology of essential hypertension has a geneticcomponent, lifestyle factors such as diet play an importantrole. Excess of sugar and salt or deficiencies of antioxidantvitamins in diet play a vital role in the aetiology ofhypertension.The relationship between hypertension, oxidative stressand antioxidants is complex and inadequatelyunderstood. Oxidative stress may play a role in thepathophysiology of hypertension. Human and animalstudies have demonstrated that HT is accompanied byincrease in oxidative stress. However, the evidence for thisin humans is not definitive
