摘要

With advances in the medical management of transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT), an increasing number of patients are now entering adulthood. Attainment of normal sexual functions and parenthood is desirable in these patients and the ultimate goal for the treating physician. Pregnancy in women with TDT is a high-risk pregnancy and requires close monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, preferably, at a centre that has expertise in managing such pregnancies. An individualized management plan has to be made for these pregnancies in order to reduce possible risks to both mother and the baby. There are a number of reports on thalassemia and pregnancy in developed countries, but a successful pregnancy is still a rarity in developing countries. Here is a report of two sisters with transfusion-dependent thalassemia who had spontaneous conception and delivered healthy babies at full term.
