The Elderly Patient with Low eGFR: Beyond the Numbers

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is widely prevalent in theelderly population. The recent “Kidney Disease: ImprovingGlobal Outcomes (KDIGO) 2012 Clinical PracticeGuideline on the Evaluation and Management of CKD”builds on the previous Kidney Disease Outcomes QualityInitiative (KDOQI) guideline and addresses many of itsgaps. However, older adults with CKD have unique characteristicsthat may not be addressed by general guidelines.This review presents many of the challenges andconsiderations in the care of elderly patients with CKD,with the ultimate goal of promoting an individualizedmanagement plan based on shared decision-making.
