TheFVB/Nmousestrainiswidelyusedinthegenerationoftransgenicmousemodels.Wehaveobservedthatmammaryglandsofwild-typevirginfemaleFVB/NCrmicefrequentlyhavethemorphologicandhistologicappearanceofaglandduringpregnancy.By13monthsofage,themammaryglandsofmorethan40%ofthemiceexaminedhadlobuloalveolarhyperplasiathatwascharacterizedbythepresenceofsecretoryalveolianddistendedductsapparentlycontainingsecretorymaterial.Theprevalenceofthisphenotypefurtherincreasedwithage.Themammaryphenotypewashighlycorrelatedwiththepresenceofproliferative,prolactin-secretinglesionsinthepituitarygland.Inmiceaged18to23months,hyperplasiaoftheparsdistaliswasseenin11of21mice(52%),andafurther4of21mice(19%)hadpituitaryadenomas.Pituitaryhyperplasiawasalreadyevidentinsomemiceasyoungasninemonths.Thepituitaryphenotypewasalsoassociatedwithhighprevalence(4/6mice)ofspontaneousmammarytumorsinagedmultiparous,butnotvirginFVB/NCrmice.Thishighprevalenceofpituitaryabnormalitiesandtheireffectsonthemammaryglandhaveimportantconsequencesfortheinterpretationofnewphenotypesgeneratedintransgenicmodelsusingthismousesubstrain.
